STATEMENTS BY PAST FELLOWS
Mirna Callejas

My name is Mirna Callejas. I am a 21-year-old college student at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, majoring in Elementary Education. Born in El Salvador, I migrated to the United States at the age of 11 and I have been able to overcome the walls of stereotyping and prejudice by achieving all that I have dreamed and set my mind to achieving. Being the second child to attend college in the history of my family has been one of my greatest accomplishments. Education has always been a first priority in my life, and teaching is one of my greatest passions. I believe that without education, a country cannot move forward and is set behind from the future.

Education as well as social justice both shape the lives of people. Both come from a vision of making a better world. During part of my summer vacation, I had the pleasure to assist SpiritHouse as an administrative assistant. This has been a wonderful experience because it has allowed me to meet a diverse group of young college students who are all working towards the same goal of making a difference in the lives of others. Thanks to this opportunity that was given to me by the Executive Director of this great organization, I am able to gain a new outlook in my life in the way I perceive myself.
