UNDER THE TENT

Our new series is called Under the Tent. The tent stands as a metaphor for a common space where we gather to explore "what does it mean to be one with each other in a divisive world". The series runs from November 2009 to May 2010. The activities for Under the Tent fall into two categories. They are:

At Homes - This is an oral-history project that we initiated with Dr. Janet Sims Wood. In creating this project, we renewed a 19th-century tradition where friends, artists, and diverse people came together for good meals, stimulating talk, and reflection. At Homes honored outstanding Black women in their 70s and 80s, such as Jean Blackwell Hudson, the builder of the Schomberg Library in New York; the honorable Mabel Smythe, Ambassador and Diplomat; and Dr. Dorothy Porter Wesley, Dean of African-American Letters, who developed the Moreland Springarn Library at Howard University. Following this tradition, SpiritHouse has an exciting lineup for this year. It includes Dr. Doris Davenport, Ms. Gail Hansberry, and Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall.

An End of a Season Does Not Mean the End of a Story: A New World Coming - This is an intergenerational preaching series that brings together outstanding preachers who will preach the good news of a new day coming. This series remembers where God has brought us and gives us the courage, hope, and reason to move forward. This series includes Rev. Malik JoDavid Sales, Rev. Dr. Renita Weems, and Rev. Dr. Cecil Gray.
